I bought a JD750 4wd for 10k with 67 loader and 240 hrs 2 years back. I haven't regretted it although I just upgraded to a 1070 and will sell the 750 soon. It just doesn't have enough lift cap for what I needed to do. Still, it was my first compact and a very well engineered tractor it is. The power steering option is worth $1000. all by itself. It sounds like a fair deal to me. Besides the size problem for me the non-power steering on my machine was a chore. If your using it on hilly country you have to be careful as the tire width is fairly narrow. Other than that, the sheet metal and paint are better than on my newer machine. Finally, pickup a technical manual if one doesn't come with it. If you are inclined, you can fix almost anything that could go wrong. I almost forgot, historically, the rear brakes tend to seize up if sat in a damp place for a couple of months. Every couple of yrs you may have to take off the drum plate and loosen things up a bit. Not a big job. The return spring gets corroded and the brakes have a hard time releasing. The 750 is a bullet proof tractor and I've been very pleased with mine, given the size and HP constraints.

Damon, Ya that was my corny idea. But was based on the fact that I have a Farmi winch for winching and skidding logs. It has a guard mounted to the back of it with expanded metal as the protective screen area. The guard separates the driver seat area from where the action is happening and is approx. the size of the ROPS. Cable is capable of spring back or launching an object at the operator if he's in the operators seat, although I rarely sit there when winching. It's also wise to secure the cable on a lower pulley for this and other reasons when skidding. I think yours is a good idea. I do try not to make permanent alterations to my own tractors with the exception of the bucket (I weld the heck out of it for all sorts of things).

Does anyone have a serial# list of the loaders recalled. Are they 420thru 460's
or just one size. I have a new 430 sitting at the dealership which I ordered. I'm just waiting for the JD fork attachment to arrive. I would like to check the numbers before purchasing. I would still purchase it but may choose to have him do the installation. I was planning to install it. Has anyone done it this way. If I do install it and it falls off the dealer probably wouldn't cover any damage or liability. The other hand is that I don't own a trailer or if I did, my pickup would not be able to haul it anyway. Do they ever come onsite for installations such as this?

I ran the 1070 for an hour yesterday and didn't notice any change in oil level or leakage in general. As for the dealer, he is a used dealer, a farmer who buys and sells compacts for a side income. The machine was bought "as is". This is always risky business but the last JD w/ low hrs I bought turned out to be worth every penny. Would I like a new machine, with a warranty? Of course! Can I realisticly afford it? No way. I don't like the risk involved but this person buys tractors, not at auction, but from individuals or from rental companies that have a maintenance crew. He doesn't doctor up his inventory. He doesn't even wash them. This makes me believe that, if no visible leak occurs, it probably, hopefully is, as you suggest. I don't see any harm in a little testing. I use 7/16" cable on a farmi winch and it will continuously pull 3.5 tons without fear of breaking. Even so, you can bet I'm not standing in direct line of fire and I always wear my helmet and faceshield. Anyways, If you have chain, try it. Go slow with plenty of rpms and maybe have someone watching the tree while you concentrate on driving. If you are concerned with the chain snapping, temporarily C-clamp a half sheet of 3/4" plywood to your ROPS to protect you. You will lose visibility and will need a friend for feedback but you will be safe. In low gear tipping etc shouldn't happen so fast that you can't react. Don't try this without a ROPS in place and make a straight away haul. Also if branches are stuck in the ground mud etc you will probably have to do some limbing before you're successful. If the tree is 20" in diam with a full crown you'll have to cut it up good and the butt ends are bound to get hung up. A skid made from a vwbug hood is an old remedy. My 2 1/2 cents

I received my 1070 today. Only 245 hrs. I was a little disappointed with the overall sheet metal cond.. There are rust bubbles under the faded paint in many spots. The paint just doesn't seem to be adhering very well either. Therefore, rust is evidently going to be a problem. Was this a problem for deere in the past? My JD750 seems to be better built in this department by a long shot w/ stronger sheet metal and better paint. The 1070's a 96' model with foam filled turfs, MFWD, cool draft features, no mid pto, but power steering! It has a great turning radius and the sync. shift seems to work fine. No more grinding gears. But.. I'm really still attached to my 750, and I am going to miss her. I can't afford both. Unfortunately the 1070's lift cap. both w/ loader and 3pth is a necessity for the next year or so. After that with only an acre or so to mow, I'll probably want a smaller tractor... I wouldn't bet on that last line. (I'll stop whining now).

Bird, Funny thing, I really hadn't considered doing anything on the front since these tires are not filled and are already mounted. With my luck, I'd end up melting rubber during the welding stage. However, it may in fact be more likely to lose a stem up front. Given that that's where the ground clutter usually is and sometimes the wheels are turned but the tract pulls straight ahead. Anyone else lose a stem lately?

Steve, I have been looking this week for a loader for my JD1070. I was settled on a 280s Great Bend loader because it's lift cap. was 400 lbs more than the JD 430. I believe that Bushhog and Great Bend are owned by Allied and therefore your Bush Hog might be a Great Bend in disguise. If it is, that's a good thing. Great bend loaders are heavy duty in all respects and in the model I've been looking at, they have a subframe that attaches to the rear axle. For additional cost I would buy the Skid steer type quick attach system they offer. Unfortunately, the model I need is out of stock until July somthing and I need it yesterday. Murphy strikes again.

Dave.. I have had a JD750 for two years. When I purchased it the knob you're talking about did not do anything. The reason I suspect is that it was frozen in place like yours might be and the previous owner broke it off inside. Upon finding this out I purchased a kit from JD and replaced it myself. It is in fact called the "stop valve" to be used to shut off or actually redirect fluid flow to a surge relief valve, which, when being forced though, heats up the hyd fluid on a cold day. The stop valve can lock the rockshaft, and therefore the 3pth in place, unless the load on it exceeds the 3pth gross wt specified for your machine. If the wt is too heavy the fluid squeezes by the relief valve and you hear that screaming sound from your hydraulics and the rockshaft lowers. My suggestion is, if you're really interested in your machine and how it works then purchase a "Technical Manual" from your JD dealer #TM1242 and if you're handy fix it yourself. These manuals are the best. Written in understandable language and full of pictures and diagrams. I only hope the newer ones for the 1070 are as good, since I'm purchasing this larger tractor this weekend. Goodluck

Jim.. I'd like to know what model Great Bend you bought and the price if I could be so bold. I too, am in the market for a loader for my JD1070. I have inquired as to price with one Kubota Dealer on a 280S but he wanted to sell me a Woods Du-all and wouldn't quote me a price on the Great Bend. He said it was antiquated technology, whatever that means. Other dealers from a long distance quoted me a list price of about $4200. This is $1000. more than a JD430, although it lifts 400lbs more and that's what I'm after. That is also including a quick attach bucket system. But not including the controls valve assembly, as I have a set for a 440 loader from a previous owner. Thanks, Eric

I have a 48" Mott flail mower. I have traded up from a 46" wide tractor to a 60" one. I can't afford to replace it with a longer model. The 3pth frame is fixed as far as I can tell. Is there any technique besides adjusting the sway chains to offset this mower in relation to the rear tires to bring it even with one side or the other.

Thanks for your input. It sounds as if you gentlemen like the idea of puncture proof tires. I spoke with seller this morning and he stated that the foam added 800lbs of ballast. I didn't catch if this was each tire or combined. My fear was that they would not give enough to give good traction on my hilly backyard. He claimed this morning that they were a soft foam filled tire. The front rims appear to have been run along and into the curb a number of times with some obvious damage. I don't think the tires could hold air as a result, yet, it doesn't seem to affect anything. He thought that they should be worth up to $1000. on the used market. I will need a more aggressive tire for my logging activites and I think this will set me back about $1500.. Even so, I think a 98 JD1070 240 hrs., 440 loader, foam filled turfs and new ags w/ rims for a total of $17k is probably a fair deal. A new JD990 w/430 loader and ags runs $19,900. A savings of almost $3,000! Is a warranty and a cosmeticly perfect unit worth $3,000. more? I don't think so.

Chris.. could you check the lift capacity on the 430 again. I do have a new JD brochure that gives the lift cap. for the 430 at 1258lbs at the pivot pin. The 460 is listed as having a lift cap. of 2325lbs. correct me if this brochure is a misprint. How about overall quality. Any idea if the 430 buckets are better, more heavy duty etc. I do know that you can switch the piston mounts to different holes on the older 440 for different attributes. The newer 430 comes w/ hydraulics mounted on both sides so that it's compatible with more tractors, but that's the extent of my knowledge except for this JD brochure.

Art, thanks for the reply. I knew the question was a little different but I was/am trying to decide which machine to buy and I don't know that much about diesels. Side by side there was an unmistakable difference in sound so I thought there might be something to it. A dyno test is a great idea. After all where talking about a lot of money. And there is no warranty with this tractor. To arrange to haul it somewhere to be tested and then hauled back to his lot would be a bit much, don't you think. Probably a good way to tick him off. Not to mention, he's 3 hrs away. After all the engine is a 1997 with only 240 hrs. Buying used can be tough on your nerves.

Roger, As I was pricing 1070's last week, I spoke to a dealer about a 990 he had on the lot, since it seems to be the same tractor. He said that the 990 only comes in basic collar shift as it is the new "economy" tractor. He stated that it's not syncronized and that you would have to come to a complete stop for any shift. Which, In my book, put it's trans. in a catagory below the 1070 where the gears are in sync in any given range. If this is not right please correct me. Funny thing, I had to mention the 990 even though it was right in front of him. All he wanted to talk about was the 4500/4600. And he didn't try to hard to sell me those either. Must have been my 14 year old truck!

Bud, Thanks for that info. I ended up chooseing the 1070 without the power beyond option bcause it had more hrs. I know that you would run a backhoe or anything that needed flow but had control valves with the power beyond. My immediate need is a connection for a tilt cyl. mounted on my york rake/grader combo. I want to leave my loader connected so I need another open line and valve. I figured the easiest and cheapest and most flexible way might be with a "power beyond" attachment and then to purchase a control valve from surplus center or North Hyd. catalog. This is all new to me so maybe there's an easier, even cheaper way.

Dave.. I looked at a beautiful ford 2120. Used with 45hrs. Nice machine, but more than I had to spend. As Joe points out the 2120 has more horses but the big difference is that it's a full size machine. I don't think mowing a 1 or 2 acre lawn would be quite practical. If I had $24k, I would have bought it on the spot. For logging and snowplowing etc it would be great. I put money down on the 1070 I saw on Mon. to hold it while I figure out whether to take the 440 loader or a 460 loader. I've been getting mixed messages from the dealers on this issue of fit for the 1070/460 combination. I need an absolute answer soon. I test drove the 1070 w/o a loader on it. It has a two stage clutch which I'm not used to, putting the let off point highup. Popped a wheely, to my surprise, first thing. Felt like an idiot. Thanks joe for looking up those stats..

My question for the day. After looking at a JD1070 today w/ 240hrs I decided to purchase it. The asking price w/ a 440 loader off another tractor he has is $16,000.. He has a 460 loader in another state that he will part with for an additional $500. ,but he really wants me to take the 440. The 460 has a much bigger capacity (Maybe too big?)than the 440 which was used on rental machines and therefore is not cosmeticly that nice, although solid. THE BIG QUESTION. DOES ANYONE KNOW FOR SURE IF THE 660 WILL FIT A 1070. Theoretically, if the 460 fits the new 990 (which is a 1070) then it should fit my machine. I would appreciate any solid info on this. Thanks
